From Clover to Cross: Finding the Trinity in Lent

Vol. 1, Issue 2

Lent has begun, ladies! In this season, we reflect on our faith through a different lens and recalibrate ourselves with fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. That said, March is also packed with beautiful and blessed feast days, including St. Joseph, St. Patrick, and the Annunciation, to name a few. As I drive down the street, I see beautiful clover wreaths hanging upon the doors of people's homes. I used to think of clovers as lucky, and finding one, or what I thought was one, could entertain a good chunk of my recess during the early elementary years. In time, Catholic schooling taught me to see the clover as a trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. After learning that, it is difficult for me to disassociate the two.

March, then, provides me with a continual reminder of this most blessed Trinity. Yesterday evening, I attended SHE (a Catholic women's group), and the speaker discussed that, at present, people in today's society feel lonelier than at any other time in recorded history. That made me so sad. Hospitality, the act of welcoming people into our homes, is continually being limited. Sometimes people don't commune with others because they feel their schedules don't permit it; others because they feel their homes aren't picture-perfect and don't want to be vulnerable in others' eyes. This got me to thinking, and I believe that we might feel less lonely if we realize that at any point in the day, we, as Catholics, are constantly on, at the very least, a 4-person team - Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and me!

Last week, I read a reflection by Deacon John, and he told a story about not being selected to be on the "strong" team on field day growing up. He said that his team consisted of many non-athletic types, but that because no one thought that they were the best, they just encouraged each other, laughed when they messed up, stayed humble, and never gave up. Deacon John tied this into our faith and the importance of being kind and doing what is right. He said that we did not have to be the strongest for God to use us and that He takes ordinary people and does extraordinary things through them. How true! Right, ladies? This month, I invite you to bring warmth to those around you. If you can be hospitable and invite a neighbor or friend over, that would be amazing. If you can't, maybe find a way to let those around you know that they are never alone because they are forever on the best team; God's team - Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and them!
